Great American Cover-Up

Although we have experienced many American cover-ups in our lifetime, this one is undoubtedly one of the most serious and potentially devastating because it damages and can ultimately destroy our health. What I am referencing are the unending array of chemicals added to our food supply, cosmetics, supplements and environment, and the lack of beneficial regulations for consumers surrounding these. Countless times individuals tell me they are now eating healthier and have cut out certain things like sodas and fast food, and while I applaud them for taking that step, they have little or no idea of all the contaminants they are still consuming daily which are contributing negatively to their health. I have felt burdened with wanting to help people understand this and the necessity of consuming and using healthy products if they truly want to experience vibrant health. We are what we eat and awareness of what is going into our body is crucial to experience health and longevity.

Your body is your house while living on this earth and it is your responsibility to take care of it. This requires you to educate yourself with knowledge of how to do that just as you must educate yourself with knowledge to obtain a job so you can survive. God put you in charge of your amazing house — only you — and how you treat it is a direct reflection of how much you value it. Without your health, what do you really have anyway?

Recently I created a class so I can share a great many toxic ingredients that are found in food, cosmetics, supplements, and the environment, and I’ll mention more about it at the end of this article. Right now however, let me share some facts that may surprise and even shock you.

Some months ago I read an article that shared some facts about McDonald’s chicken nuggets. Please realize that many fast food chains are represented by this information as many of them do the same. In an article written by Michael Pollan, he shared that McNuggets contain 38 ingredients that are considered chemicals. One is tertiary butylhydroquinine (TBHQ), a petroleum-derived chemical sprayed onto the “food” or inside the box to preserve freshness. Studies have shown that this has caused precursors to stomach tumors and DNA damage, and can be carcinogenic (cancer-causing). They contain ingredients like sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, hydrogenated oils, modified food starch (MSG — one of the worse food additives on the market) and many others. How scary is this! Technically it means when you eat McNuggets you are eating a synthetic mix of chemicals along with a bit of poorly treated, fried chicken. How many children do you know who love these, maybe your own? Yet it’s hardly appealing to be eating a mouthful of chemicals.

Let’s talk about a typical fast food strawberry milkshake. Written in one of Britain’s newspapers, The Guardian, was this shocking article with the headline: The 59 Ingredients in a Fast Food Strawberry Milkshake! This is an attention-getter for sure, but the saddest part is that it is true.

Apparently in this particular strawberry milkshake, (and many others do the same) 59 chemicals were found but the two main ingredients were noticeably absent: Milk and Strawberries! Unbelievable, don’t you agree? The strawberry flavor you may enjoy yourself was created from 40 ingredients, ingredients like: Amyl valerate, Anethol, Ethyl lactate, Methylphenylglyciudate, Ionine, Maltol, and Methyl benzoate. Sound appetizing? Any metyl, butyl, ethyl ingredients come from petroleum. Maybe the name should be changed since it doesn’t represent the ingredients?

You’ve probably noticed the ingredient ‚ ‘natural flavorings’ on some of your labels, and seeing the word natural might have convinced you this is a good ingredient. Not so. The word natural has little value in describing a healthy ingredient nowadays, and often refers to MSG (monosodiumamate). MSG is known to cause many allergic reactions and overexcites your cells. This can lead to brain damage, worsening of learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease among other things, and even death. It’s a silent killer that’s worse for you than alcohol, nicotine and many drugs.

MSG originated from Chinese food and was considered a flavor enhancer, used in items like canned soups, crackers, meats, salad dressings, frozen dinners, in restaurants, school cafeterias and even baby food and formula. It keeps the food looking fresher. Sadly, this can be causing serious damage to many of you reading this right now. Consumption of this has been linked to obesity, eye damage, headaches, fatigue, depression and many other symptoms.

These ingredients always contain MSG: autolyzed yeast, textured protein, yeast nutrient, calcium casienate, glutamic acid, yeast extract, gelatin, hydrolyzed protein, sodium casienate, flavors, natural flavorings, corn starch, maltodextrin, and so many more. Be careful in restaurants since they use so much processed food and much of what they place in front of you contains MSG. Ask for MSG-free food always if you value your health, and make sure you are being told the truth.

What if it was necessary for you to avoid corn? You would look for corn equivalents on the label to avoid, right? But what you probably won’t know is the hidden corn in many ingredients. These would include: malt extract and syrup, sorbitol, food starch, dextrin, baking powder, MSG, maltodextrin, confectioner’s sugar, fructose syrup, just to name a few. Most likely you had no idea these ingredients were corn-derived, and most often from genetically modified corn at that, creating even more havoc for your body. It could be disastrous if you consumed these if allergic or sensitive to corn.

Of course there are hundreds more I could share but space does not permit. What about cosmetics? It is incredible what manufacturers put into the products you slather and rub into your skin. Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body, and that everything you rub into your skin goes directly into your blood stream and is carried throughout your body? So rule of thumb is to only put on your skin what you would be willing to eat!

Yet most face and body products are loaded with dozens of chemicals. It was reported that one fragrance listed on a label could contain over 250 chemicals to create that smell. This means that every time you dab or spray that perfume onto your body, or rub that lotion into your skin, your body is absorbing as many as 250 chemicals or more. How scary is that! Do not use any product that contains any form of parabens, petrolatum, mineral oil, fragrance, color, sulfates, dioxane, urea, toluene, anything artificial, PEG, and the list could go on and on. They are known to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing), disrupters of the immune system, block nutrient absorption and disrupt brain function among other things. Make it simple and use minimal products, all things you would be willing to eat! And if you cannot pronounce the ingredient, it’s probably a good to avoid using it. When I present the class there will be in-depth information shared.

Another area of great concern to me are supplements. People who are interested in remaining or becoming healthy often purchase a rather large supply of vitamins and herbs, believing they are preserving or restoring their health. Sadly, most of those supplements contain toxic fillers and binders that inadvertently interfere with the nutrient absorption and distribution. One very toxic ingredient found in the vast majority of supplements is magnesium stearate. (also stearic acid or calcium stearate) Store owners, distributors and manufacturers will tell you there is minimal usage of this ingredient and it is vegetable derived, so is harmless. Actually, magnesium stearate, made from cottonseed oil or palm oil, is subjected to high heat and thus creates a hydrogenated saturated fat. In addition, cotton crops are heavily sprayed with pesticides and the residues are high in the cottonseed oil. Capsules in solution for 20 minutes went from 90% absorption without stearates to 25% absorption with stearates. Continued use of products containing stearates of any kind suppress the action of T-cells, a key component of the immune system. Impaired digestion is another serious effect of using the stearates.

You might be thinking right now, “What exactly is okay to eat, drink, use and breathe?” It becomes a daunting task at first to realize what is really healthy and what is not, but as you become familiar with the toxic ingredients versus the good ingredients and educate yourself, it becomes much easier. Yet isn’t it worth it since you are given one body (house) for this lifetime, and most probably wish it to be vibrantly healthy? Getting and staying healthy requires some due diligence and commitment to yourself. You’re the only one who can take charge of your health so it has to be your choice. What baffles me is the person who knows the facts but chooses to ignore them and go back to old habits and choices. But humans do have free will to make their own choices.

I gravitate toward simple, basic, pure and easy now since I believe life is meant to be lived this way, and I feel society is being guided back to this lifestyle, given where our country is right now. So in order to restore and ensure great health even in the midst of all the misleading information, toxic chemicals and just plain greed at our expense, here are four things to remember in order to achieve top health:

  1. Avoid eating processed or packaged foods
  2. Eat whole foods
  3. Prepare your food at home
  4. If eating anything packaged, scrutinize the labels and make sure what you putting into your body — become educated

Remember, whatever you put on or into your body either contributes to or takes away from vibrant health. And as always, it’s your choice.
